Five new savings checks are generally available this month, covering dedicated hosts, managed Redis-compatible caching, Redshift Serverless, and email spend. Here’s what landed.

Dedicated hosts stop being a silent cost

Two new checks tackle EC2 dedicated hosts from both ends. The first finds dedicated hosts with no running instances on them — you’re paying for the host whether anything runs on it or not. The second finds hosts that can be consolidated, so the same workloads run on fewer hosts. If you’ve ever kept a dedicated host around after a licensing or compliance project finished, these will find it.

Better deals on caching and data warehousing

MemoryDB clusters can now be checked for migration to Valkey, the open-source engine compatible with Redis — the deployments cost less for the same workload. On the warehouse side, a new check identifies Redshift Serverless workloads that would save money with a capacity commitment, where paying ahead for steady usage beats on-demand per-use pricing.

Email spend, and faster results across the board

A new check for Simple Email Service (SES) looks at whether your current spend would be cheaper on a different SES pricing plan — the kind of thing that’s easy to get right and just as easy to never look at again. Behind the scenes, savings scans now batch their AWS lookups and skip cleanly past checks an account doesn’t have permissions for, instead of stalling the whole run. Large accounts in particular will see recommendations arrive faster.

– WorkSpaces Delete Idle identifies Amazon WorkSpaces with no user connection over the lookback window that can be terminated. 

– DocumentDB Delete Idle Clusters and MemoryDB Delete Idle Clusters do the same for clusters showing no database connections or activity, eliminating instance- and node-hour cost respectively. 

– CloudTrail Optimize Retention moves eligible trails onto the one-year extendable retention pricing model.
